“It’s easier than you (might) think…”

Nowadays, information, especially digital information, is the proverbial golden exchange standard in which we trade and the brokers of information are kings or overlords.  Whichever way you look at it, it is a cache of golden repositories. There is, however, an Achilles heel that can render you helpless and cause you to go from riches to rags in a nanosecond, and that, my dear reader, is ransomware. You may have heard of it in a news article or post, but what exactly is it, and how is it constructed?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that locks or encrypts a user’s computer, preventing them from accessing their data or programs, information, and resources, until they pay a ransom, hence the name “ransomware”. 

Ransomware has been around since the late 1980s, and it has become increasingly sophisticated over the years. While the idea of writing ransomware may seem daunting and complex to some, it’s surprisingly straightforward and does not require an advanced knowledge of programming.  

Below is a sample of a basic ransomware code snippet.

Now, this is an extremely basic example of ransomware, we will explore more examples later in the article, but first, we must discuss the steps and motivation involved in planning and perfecting a ransomware campaign.  Motivation runs....
